10 Tips for Your First Time Renting a Boat

But before rushing into a boat rental, take the time to do it right. Use these 10 valuable tips to successfully plan ahead for that first boat rental trip – so your excursion will be a success from start to finish!

1. Weather reports and water levels

Know the current weather prior to boat rental and plan accordingly. Being informed of incoming storms, lightning, and nautical conditions are imperative. In addition, be aware of Lake Travis water depth, as water levels on this lake fluctuate frequently. What might’ve previously been a deep location, could have you scraping bottom if not careful.

2. Boater’s Education

Texas state boating laws require anyone born on or after September 1, 1993 to complete a boaters education course if they intend on operating a boat with more than 15 horsepower, or a personal watercraft – even if that boat or PWC is a rental. We recommend BoatUS. Additionally, the Texas reciprocity law provides inclusion of out of state boaters carrying USCG recognized boater education certification.

3. Which type of boat rental do you need?

Not every boat is created equal. Research which type of watercraft meets the needs of your desired watersport whether it’s cruising, fishing, SeaDoo jetskiing or wakeboarding, pontooning, etc. You get the picture!

4. Become familiar with the boat

Take the time to get acquainted with the boat before you venturing far from shore. Ask the boat rental staff to show you the ropes and ask questions if you’re not sure! Consider taking it for spin near the marina with a staff member.

5. The guest list

Boats have capacity limits required to maintain safely. So, reserve a large enough boat. Know guests before leaving port. You will be responsible for their well being and actions for the duration of the trip.  You can have fun while expecting responsible behavior.

6. Dry phones and protected skin

Keep electronics in a waterproof bag and frequently apply sunscreen with the proper SPF rating. Remember: you will sunburn on the water faster – continuing to burn for up to 4 hours after exposure.

7. Overdress

Temperatures can change greatly on the water from hot to cold. Especially if you’ve gotten sunburned! Hence, dress in layers.

8. Safety please!

a.) Don’t drink and boat or act foolishly.

b.) Use common sense and wear life vests.

c.) Be respectful of other boaters and water goers.

9. More essentials, less space hogs

Only bring the essentials and limit space hogs like multiple coolers. Remember: what you carry on takes up space, and you will need to carry off at the end of the trip.

10. Emergency contact

Always leave your personal information with an emergency contact including your destination plans in case of unforeseen circumstances.
